Video poker: held cards, replacement cards and paytables

Video poker evaluates a final hand against a payout table. The choice of cards to keep, the number of hands and the exact table all belong in the game's description.

Hold keeps selected cards; draw supplies replacements before the final hand is evaluated.
A simplified round. The selected game defines the deck, decisions and paytable.

From the first hand to the final hand

In a conventional draw-style video poker game, five cards are dealt. The player keeps selected cards and draws replacements for the others. The completed hand is then evaluated against a paytable. There is no need for another customer to lose the same pot for an award to be paid.

Evolution's First Person Video Poker is a documented RNG example. It allows a choice of paytable and multiple hands, with held cards retained when replacement cards are drawn. Those details describe that implementation, not every game using the words "video poker".

The paytable is part of the identity

Names such as Jacks or Better and Deuces Wild describe different variants. IGT's Triple Play product sheet lists several available themes within one product family. A shared cabinet or software family therefore does not imply a shared paytable.

When comparing two titles, record the awarded amount for each qualifying hand, any wild-card rule and the stake column being used. A screenshot with only the top award cannot establish the return of the whole game.

Detail Why to keep it
Variant and provider Distinguishes similarly named implementations.
Paytable Specifies what each final combination returns.
Stake per hand Identifies the cost of one hand.
Number of hands Shows how much is committed across the round.

More hands mean more exposure

An interface can show a small stake beside each hand while the round charges for several hands. For an illustrative stake of one credit on five hands, the round commits five credits before any award. Check whether the displayed cost is per hand or total.

A game can also apply a default decision when the player does not choose cards before a timer expires. Read the actual rules for this behaviour. A default or highlighted hold should not be treated as a promise of the best possible result.

Keep the evidence specific

Slotron does not assign one return percentage to the entire video poker category. Such a figure would need the exact paytable and the assumptions used to calculate it. A different deck, payout or decision rule changes the comparison.

The examples here identify mechanics and product families. They do not establish that a particular casino offers them in your country. Individual game listings and their dated sources carry that evidence. Our approach explains how missing information remains unknown.
