India: the 2026 framework for online money games

India’s online money-game prohibition and the separate treatment of social games and esports under the 2026 rules.

Sources reviewed

Separate checks for local law, operator restrictions and measured website access.
A website that loads can still be prohibited by law or by the operator’s terms.

A recent change to the legal framework

India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act was enacted in August 2025. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology announced rules taking effect on 1 May 2026, with a framework for distinguishing prohibited online money games from permissible social games and esports.

Descriptions that discuss only older state-by-state distinctions between skill and chance can miss this national framework. For a money-game claim, use the current official material and its effective dates.

The payment and reward structure matters

The government’s explanation identifies stakes or fees, an expectation of monetary winnings and rewards that can be redeemed or monetised outside the game among the factors used to determine a game’s status. Calling a product “social” does not settle that assessment.

The rules establish the Online Gaming Authority of India. They also provide determination and registration procedures; a determination concerns a particular game and provider. The announcement does not create a general licence for offshore casinos.

Product claim What still needs checking
Social game Whether its payments and rewards fit that category
Esport Its treatment under the official framework
Online money game The prohibition described in the Act and rules
International casino licence Its relevance to India cannot be assumed

Read casino acceptance cautiously

An operator can list India among supported countries while its terms place responsibility for local legality on the user. Slotron preserves that distinction in the evidence. The country label records the operator’s statement; it does not resolve the legal contradiction or establish permission to play.

A cryptocurrency deposit does not change the need to assess the underlying game. Nor does the availability of an app or a local-language page prove that the service has been reviewed by the Indian authority.

Dates and limits of this overview

The linked ministry announcement is dated 22 April 2026 and gives 1 May as the rules’ commencement date. The source-review date on this page records when we checked it. These are different dates with different purposes.

This is a summary of the published government framework, not an assessment of a particular court challenge, state proceeding or player’s circumstances. We do not infer that a named casino is authorised from a country list, and we do not test access through deposits or bets.

Each observation has a scope, review date and source where available. Operator statements, corroboration, conflicts, stale information and unknowns are labeled separately. A checked source is not a guarantee that a claim is true.

Country policy is separate from website reachability. Game categories do not confirm an original game's availability, and blockchain transfers alone do not prove casino ownership or winnings.

Published profiles may contain unresolved facts; read their scope and check the current terms before making a decision.
